Lately I have had this insane calling to travel. To be where I am not. To be adventurous and to explore. If you have ever felt like this then you will know how much it plays on your mind and continues to tug at you…

So I started thinking about ways I can get that ‘travel feeling’ without going too far from home and without having to spend too much money.

Here is what I came up with – Try it out and get that ‘travel fix’ you have been craving!

1 – Get out of your comfort zone.
When we are not travelling it is so easy to get stuck in a routine. Break that routine, charge things up and get out of your comfort zone.
This is something we do frequently when we are travelling. Think of some of the things you have done whilst travelling that have moved you out of your comfort zone.
What is something you have always thought of doing but have been too scared to do or have put off. Maybe sky diving, bungee jumping or white water rafting. Do something thrilling, something that scares you.

There is a huge sense of satisfaction when you do something that scares you or makes you feel uncomfortable. Capture that!

2 – Go on a hike
Getting out into nature and getting your endorphins going is always satisfying. Go on a hike somewhere you don’t often go, try somewhere new. Take time to appreciate your surroundings. Breathe in that fresh air.

3 – Send postcards
You don’t have to leave your own country to send a friend a postcard. Don’t we all LOVE to get postcards? I think it is just as satisfying to send one. Show someone you care and you are thinking of them. Encourage them to come and visit you in your home town.

4 – Get lost
It is often tricky to get lost in your home town or city but I challenge you to try. If you can go to a near- by city or town you don’t know so well then do that. Put away your iPhone and walk around. Use your sense of direction. Ask strangers for directions and advice on where to go, what to see. The purpose of getting lost is to try and find some hidden gems or secret spots you haven’t stumbled upon before.

5 – Eat different food or try a new restaurant
Try somewhere you have never been before. Order something you wouldn’t normally order. Try new things!

6 – Explore closer to home
What do all the tourists do when they visit your home town and its surroundings? Have you done all these things? I know I sure haven’t! Even if you have why not get out there and do something touristy in your own back yard? Appreciate what you have at home…

7 – Talk to strangers
I struck up a conversation with a homeless man the other day and he was so interesting! It made me really feel like I was somewhere else, meeting someone new… Now I get to enjoy saying hello to him each day or giving him a wave.

8 – Go to your local information centre
When was the last time you visited your local information centre? Go check it out! See what they offer to do in your town and near-by areas… You may be pleasantly surprised by something new. It may inspire a new idea…

9 – Host Couch Surfers or rent out your room on Air B&B
This is a great way to meet other like-minded travellers and possibly make new friends. You can talk to these people about their home country, their cultures and learn so much about a new place. Just hearing an accent can make you feel like you’re in another part of the world.

10 – Appreciate your surroundings
Slow down. Stop. Think. What do you have in your home, your town, your backyard, your area that you can be grateful for. What can you appreciate today?
